In today’s vlog, @lornerubis and I dive into the importance of finding your WHY. Although it sounds easy, forming a WHY statement can be very challenging.

Simon Sinek brought to life the WHY in his TED talk “How Leaders Inspire Action.” In the talk, he shared that every organization needs first to understand why they’re pursuing a goal before moving to how and what they’ll do to achieve it.

When leaders introduce new ideas, it’s easy to get swept up in the excitement of a new project; you’re ready to start now! However, if you don’t define and explain the WHY around an idea, your teams may not take full ownership of the concept and see it to success.

As a leader, you need to determine WHY with your team because they will bring the ideas to life. When people can see themselves in a vision, they can bring creativity and develop the idea — allowing everyone to contribute to a WHY statement is a natural way to increase engagement and success.

WHY statements should have a personal and emotional connection for people, developing a one as a team will help build trust and belief in the idea, which will create an excellent opportunity for the concept to succeed.

Today’s takeaways:

  1. For any goal or project, always start by building a WHY statement. Ask: how will this project impact your organization?
  2. Then sit with your team, present your WHY and get their input.
  3. Clarifying your WHY with your team creates ownership and drives them to success.

Here’s to disrupting sameness and achieving #betterwork.
