Yes, change is messy and uncomfortable. Most of us try our best to avoid the unfamiliar by building routines and patterns. But today, @lornerubis and I encourage you to step outside of your comfort zone and lean into the messy and uncomfortable – especially if you’re at the top of your game.
When we’re succeeding, it’s easy to feel like we’ll be successful forever. We’ll never stop thriving because we’ve figured out the secret formula for success! In reality, periods of high growth mean that we should be focusing on our next innovation, project, or endeavour.
When we get comfortable in our routines, we forget that we must always be learning and changing. Avoiding change puts us behind – we stop pushing ourselves to improve and learn new skills. But we can’t sit still because the world around us definitely isn’t sitting still; instead, we must always be working towards the next opportunity.
Rather than seeing change as a negative, re-frame it as a chance to enhance your skills. Embracing change can set you up for future success, as you’ll enter new roles with a myriad of experiences that you can leverage to help solve problems. Having a diverse perspective can allow you to bring innovative ideas to the table.
This week, Lorne and I encourage you to:
- Take the time to analyze where you are. Are you in a stagnant position?
- Consider what you could do to challenge yourself. What makes you uncomfortable?
Remember that change is uncomfortable and messy. It takes time to get comfortable in a new position, career, or skill. But getting comfortable with the uncomfortable is the best way to disrupt sameness and achieve #betterwork.
